YouTube Video VVVWWlpIaHNKb3VJUEpiRl91VkpiM1F3LjVtUE1PcHNEZ1Zz Leak detection is a process of elimination.

On this job in West Palm Beach, everyone suspected a leak at the Badu swim jet on a brand-new pool. The builder had already cut/epoxied part of the grate, but after dye testing, hydrophone listening, checking equipment, and confirming plumbing lines were holding… everything looked fine.

Then at the very end, I dye tested the spa light—and that was the leak.

Key lesson: if your spa is leaking, it can still make it look like “the pool is going down,” because the pool feeds the spa during normal circulation and overflow.

Pool Leak Detection Is Just Process of Elimination
When we start every single pool leak detection, the first thing we do is inspect the pool equipment.

This homeowner reported losing up to two inches of water per day. By simply turning on the pump and closely examining the equipment, we immediately found a visible leak spraying water — more than enough to explain the water loss.

Before dye testing, pressure testing, or diving the pool, always check the equipment pad. You’d be surprised how often the leak is right here.

Why We ALWAYS Check Pool Equipment First
In today’s video, I’m performing a professional swimming pool leak detection on an empty pool in Loxahatchee, Florida that is scheduled to be plastered tomorrow. This job came directly from a pool builder who wanted every plumbing line checked before the pool is filled and finished.

Because the pool is empty, this inspection focuses exclusively on pressure testing the plumbing lines—there is no dye testing and no hydrophone listening possible without water in the pool. In this video, I walk through what leak detection looks like during renovations and replasters, what can and cannot be verified on an empty pool, and how pool builders use pressure testing to rule out underground plumbing issues before moving forward.

In this video, I cover:

 • Why leak detection on an empty pool is limited
 • What pressure testing can (and cannot) confirm
 • The difference between suction lines and return lines
 • How spa jet air lines and check valves affect pressure testing
 • Common causes of minor pressure loss during testing
 • How I price swimming pool leak detection jobs
 • How I generate work in a new market like Palm Beach County
 • What equipment is actually required to get started in leak detection

This is a real-world example of how leak detection professionals work with pool builders, contractors, and service companies to prevent costly problems before plaster and startup.

Pressure Testing an Empty Pool Before Plaster | Real Swimming Pool Leak Detection Job
Today’s leak detection took us to Wellington, Florida, where we identified a main drain leak—one of the most common and misunderstood swimming pool leak locations.

In this video, I explain why pools tend to leak where two different materials meet, and how aging plastic components—specifically the main drain sump—can begin separating from the concrete pool shell over time. When that seal fails, water can escape the structure of the pool without any visible surface damage.

After removing the main drain cover and performing a dye test, we confirmed significant water loss at the top of the sump. I’ve included GoPro footage so you can see exactly what this type of leak looks like in real time.

If you’re losing water and suspect a structural or main drain issue, this is an important one to understand.

This Main Drain Pool Leak Is Extremely Common (Here’s Why)
Pool losing water and someone used pool putty on the light? That can cause bigger problems later.

In this YouTube Short, we break down a real swimming pool leak detection in Jupiter, Florida, and explain why pool putty is not the right material for pool light leaks.

Pool putty cures hard, fails over time, and makes future repairs and proper diagnosis much more difficult.

If your pool light is leaking, proper testing and the right materials matter.

Stop using Pool Putty on Pool Light Leaks đźš«
This is one of the most common pool leaks we find.

What you’re looking at is a skimmer throat leak — where the concrete pool structure meets the plastic skimmer housing. Over time, the hydraulic cement in that joint breaks down, and water starts escaping behind the skimmer.

If your pool only leaks down to the bottom of the tile or skimmer, this is usually why.

The Most Common Pool Leak
In this video, I’m on a swimming pool leak detection job in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida that was sent to me by a pool builder after a freshly resurfaced pool dropped three inches overnight.

When a pool loses that much water that fast, it almost always points to one of two things:

• A broken plumbing line
• Major structural damage in the pool shell

In this case, using a hydrophone, dye testing, pressure testing, and a full underwater inspection, we were able to confirm structural damage in the main drain sump at the bottom of the pool.

I walk you through:

• How excessive overnight water loss helps narrow down leak causes

• What hydrophone “noise signatures” can tell you about structural vs plumbing leaks

• Why main drain sump failures can cause massive water loss

• How dye testing confirms the exact leak location

• Why pressure testing is still critical even after finding a structural leak

This is a real-world example of how professional swimming pool leak detection is performed step-by-step, without guessing.

• How not to apply dye (too much dye can hide a leak)

• What proper dye control looks like around plumbing lines, drains, and lights

How Pros Dye Test a Swimming Pool Leak
In this video, I walk through a real swimming pool leak detection performed in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida for a homeowner who recently purchased the property and began noticing abnormal water loss.

The pool was losing approximately 3 inches of water per week, with the water consistently dropping from mid-tile to just below the skimmer. The previous owner had an auto-fill system installed, which likely masked the issue for years. Once the new homeowner moved in, it became clear something wasn’t right.

During this leak detection, I demonstrate the full professional process, including:

 • Hydrophone listening
 • Dye testing
 • Pressure testing of plumbing lines
 • Scuba inspection and full visual examination

One of the most important fundamentals discussed in this video is proper preparation before leak detection—specifically why the water must be clear and at normal operating level before testing begins.

Using the hydrophone, I began hearing abnormal noise localized around the skimmer. Dye testing later confirmed a leak in the skimmer throat, one of the most common structural leaks we find in concrete pools. This occurs where the pool structure meets the plastic skimmer housing, a joint originally sealed with hydraulic cement that can degrade over time.

I also explain:

How to properly dye test with minimal water movement

Why pool putty is considered a temporary band-aid, not a permanent repair

How and why we drain spas during pressure testing

Best practices for pressure testing plumbing lines

Why one spa drain line could not be pressure tested due to debris obstruction

The homeowner plans to resurface the pool next year and opted for a temporary putty application to slow water loss in the meantime.

If you’re a pool owner, service company, contractor, or real estate professional, this video provides real-world insight into how professional leak detection is actually performed.
