Is Your Pool Losing More Water Than It Should?

Answer a few simple questions about your pool and how quickly the water level is dropping. We’ll compare your water loss with the actual weather conditions from the same period and estimate how likely it is that your pool has a leak.

Step 1

Tell us about the pool.

You do not need exact measurements. Give us what you know and skip what you don’t.

We use the ZIP code only to match your measurement to local weather conditions.
What kind of pool setup do you have?
Do you know roughly how big the pool is?Optional
Know the pool’s exact surface area? Enter it instead
Optional
sq ft
Most homeowners will not know this. Only enter it if you already have the number.
✓
No problem. Exact pool size is not required to estimate leak likelihood. We mainly use pool size to estimate how many gallons may be disappearing each day.
Step 2

How much water did the pool lose?

Use the change in water level — not gallons added back to the pool.

inches
How long did it take to lose that amount?
When did you finish measuring?
This lets us match your water loss to the weather from the same period.
Know the exact start and finish times? Add them for the most precise weather match
You can ignore this section if the quick choices above are close enough.
Was the automatic water filler turned off during the measurement?
Could anything else have changed the water level?

Step 3

A few quick details about the pool.

These help us adjust the evaporation estimate without making you calculate anything yourself.

Was the pool covered during most of the measurement?
Is the pool inside a screen enclosure?
Was the pool heater running?
Were waterfalls, a spa spillover, fountains, or other water features running?
Know the pool water temperature? Add it for greater accuracy
Optional
°F
If you don’t know it, leave this blank. We’ll estimate it from the weather and pool conditions.
Final step

What have you noticed?

You don’t need to know what any symptom means. Just choose the answers that sound closest to what you’re seeing.

Does the pool seem to lose more water with the pump running or turned off?
Does the water seem to stop dropping at the same level each time?
Have you noticed any of these?Choose all that apply
Already did a bucket test? Add it if you want
i
A bucket test is not required and does not control the result. If you already did one, we can use it only as supporting information because rain, splash-out, autofill, setup, and measurement differences can affect the comparison.

How this result was calculated

The calculator converts your measured water-level drop into inches per day, then compares it with an estimated evaporation range based on the weather from the same ZIP code and measurement window. Pool cover, screen enclosure, heater use, water features, and optional water temperature adjust the estimate. We intentionally compare your loss against the high end of the expected evaporation range before calling any remaining water loss “unexplained.”

How the Pool Leak Calculator Works

Water loss is not caused by evaporation at one fixed rate. Temperature, humidity, wind, rainfall, water temperature, covers, screen enclosures, and moving water can all change how quickly a pool loses water naturally. This calculator uses your measured water drop and the weather from the same time period to create a more useful screening estimate.

Why exact pool size is optional

The main leak-likelihood calculation is based on how many inches the water level drops over time. Pool surface area is mainly needed to convert that vertical drop into an estimated number of gallons. If you do not know your pool dimensions, you can still get a leak-likelihood result.

Why this cannot identify the exact leak

A calculator cannot dye test a skimmer, listen with a hydrophone, pressure test plumbing, inspect a light conduit, or scuba-dive the pool structure. The result is designed to help determine whether the water loss looks suspicious and what symptoms may be worth testing professionally.

Important: This calculator is an educational screening tool, not a professional diagnosis. Historical weather is location-based and may differ from the exact conditions at your pool. Rainfall, shade, buildings, screens, covers, swimmer activity, water additions, measurement error, and other local conditions can affect the result. Do not drain a pool, excavate plumbing, or perform repairs solely because of this analysis.
